I’ve read this book weeks ago and every time I’m about to do a review, I end up doing other stuff, like checking new books online, scrolling through facebook, getting up to get a cup of coffee, and eventually end up reading a new book. I believe I’ve read over 10 books after this one, some are just short stories but still, and because I’ve been putting off writing a review, I’m also left with a ton of books un-reviewed (My inner OC-ness told me to review books chronologically from which one I’ve read first to my latest finished book). Damn!
So why am I procrastinating??? Well... I’m still baffled by what happened in Insurgent. I cannot believe I was close to giving this a 2-star rating. I loved the first book, Divergent so I was shocked to find myself taking a break from reading Insurgent (I’ve finished 2 books during the hiatus).
I’ll have you know that I’ve been anticipating the release of Insurgent. Like seriously looking forward to it that the day of its release, I actually went off to every bookstore nearby to get a copy. Since I’m from the Philippines, obviously the release wouldn’t be the same date as it is in the U.S. but I was a determined little freak and went off every single chance I get to find a copy. Two weekends later I was finally able to get one and of course I dived into it as soon as I got home. Imagine my face after reading several chapters of Tris whining and getting all emo. What the heck happened to this series?!
Now I don’t mean to be a heartless b***h but that was quite a wait for Tris to get back to her old self. To say that Tris was annoying (I’ve seen it from my GR friends who’ve read the book already) is a huge understatement. She was a PAIN! Her thoughts were just too painful for me to read. And the way she treated Tobias... let’s not even go there!
I appreciated the action scenes and all the mystery behind the motives of the Invalids but Tris’ attitude just got in the way of letting me enjoy this book. Also, there were a lot of side comments and/or conversations here and there that I feel weren’t even necessary to begin with. I didn’t get some of the jokes that the characters were trying to pull off (heck, I don’t even remember most of what they were talking about). After my hiatus when I decided to get back to the reading it, I found myself breezing through some chapters. Once Tris got into her mellow-drama moments, I sped up to wherever it would end. I know I’m being mean and I’m sorry for my unkindly bashing on this girl but I’ve had enough.
I also hated the idea that in the end Tobias did the humble thing to apologize to Tris, while this girl got all the credit for saving the day. I mean, yeah, she did uncover something and did the right thing in the end but the whole “Tris is our heroine” thing just seemed off after all the drama I had to read through beforehand.
I’m glad that by the near end of the book that at least I got a spark of the Tris I got to know from Divergent. Thank you for finally getting a hold of yourself, Tris.
The ending was another shocking moment for me, the good kind this time, because I had no idea there was a whole other picture to this world, and the mystery over what exactly this will be all about is a good enough reason for me to read the next book, in spite of being unsatisfied with Insurgent. It made me happy that I stuck with the book through the end since I found something to look forward to.
