The Amaranth Enchantment by Julie Berry

The Amaranth Enchantment
by Julie Berry
Summary from Goodreads:

"A delightful fairytale by a lyrical new voice.

When Lucinda Chapdelaine was a small child, her parents left for the royal ball and never returned. Ever since, Lucinda has been stuck in perpetual servitude at her evil aunt’s jewelry store. Then, on the very same day, a mysterious visitor and an even more bizarre piece of jewelry both enter the shop, setting in motion a string of twists and turns that will forever alter Lucinda’s path. In this magical story filled with delightful surprises, Lucinda will dance at the royal ball, fall under the Amaranth Witch’s spell, avenge her parents’ death, and maybe—just maybe—capture the heart of a prince."

Rating:

I liked this book! It was a Cinderella-like tale but not so much... in a good way.

The characters were distinct. I liked Lucinda, she may be a bit innocent and too trusting but I can’t blame her since her aunt pretty much locked her up and never let Lucinda out of her sight. She wasn’t very aware of the world outside her uncle’s shop that she has lived in since her parents died when she was five. I was actually annoyed with Peter. He caused most of the trouble that Lucinda got into so I was really pissed at him but in the end I’d gotten to know him and I liked him then. Prince Gregor, as any prince can be, was of course charming and witty. The Amaranth Witch, was at first uncanny and I thought she was the bad guy, but it turns out she's sort of like a fairy godmother but not really.

At first I thought that this would turn out a bit predictable but there were parts of the book that surprised me. Just when I’ve already made up my mind that a certain situation would happen, it backslides into something different that makes me want to keep reading.

It’s a good light read and I enjoyed the fairytale-ish ending.
