Ramblings #7: A Certain Mentioning...

I actually posted this on Instagram recently. I was reading the Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa a few days ago and I came across the sneak peek of her upcoming novel, the Lost Prince, which is a spin-off to the Iron Fey series.

I felt a rush of pride over finding these few words:

Ethan is taking Kali! It's more known as "Arnis" to most of us Filipinos. Kali/Arnis is a Filipino martial art that I remembered to be a part of our PE classes back in high school... Yes, we actually spar with one of our classmates during class. My experience on Kali is very limited, as in I got to hold the two sticks for about 30 seconds... that's it. lol. For some reason our section didn't dive into the stances and stuff like the other sections who had the art as part of their exams. Jealous! I can't remember why that happened though.

Anyway, my heart leaped with patriotic joy for our culture being mentioned by one of my favorite authors. So, thank you, Ms. Kagawa.

I'm such a big fan and I've been looking forward to the Lost Prince ever since I first heard of it but now I'm even more eager. I want to see if this skill would really help Ethan throughout his adventure.

    1. I'm not a fan of the cover either. Plus it looks a little unpolished. Can't wait to read it too nonetheless. ^_^

  2. Thank you for sharing this! I myself feel a rush when we, Filipinos, are mentioned in books, we're not as anonymous as we think we are.

  3. I took an Arnis class, that is pretty awesome. I was really terrible at it, I just couldn't hit my sparring partners hard, even though we were supposed too. Anyways this just might boost me up to start reading her books too!

    1. LOL. Well, at least you got to fight. I didn't even get to raise the sticks.. Also, I happen to be terrible at most sports.. But I am so jealous that you got to try it.
