Filipino ReaderCon 2012

Hello there!
Nice of you to drop by the BLAIR BOOK PROJECT blog. Yesterday, August 18, 2012, I attended a wonderful event at the Filipinas Heritage Library: THE 2ND FILIPINO READERCON!!!

Cool, huh? It was exciting for me because it's the first time for me to attend such an event. Last year (ReaderCon was held along with the Manila International Book Fair), I just went straight for the book fair downstairs and since I'm a little bit of a Cinderella (I try to cram all my to-do things in one day) I dashed off after a few hours.

At this event...well, I didn't really catch much of it. I was late! Sorry. In my defense, Saturdays are my errand days so I had things to do before I headed to the event. But I had a great time during the few hours left that I was able to catch.

I didn't really know which book discussion to attend. Since I was meeting with Maria from Reading is the Ultimate Aphrodisiac, I thought I'd just go along with where she was going. Can you believe my surprise when I found myself sitting in on the book discussion (headed by The Mysterious Reading Society) of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY?! I thought Maria was KIDDING when she texted me that we'd attend that instead of the THE LITTLE PRINCE. Wow! I was already wondering what had I gotten myself into.

Now just to give you a little background, I did TRY to read Fifty Shades of Grey. I stopped after a few chapters because I couldn't take Ana's voice (I apologize to those who love this book but this just isn't for me). Anyway, during the hour and a half or so of the discussion, I found myself really enjoying the topic. The positive and negative feedback from different readers (I think majority didn't like it that much though) was hilarious and really entertaining.

I don't have any pictures during the event, I was to shy to click away. Seriously, what's wrong with me?! But I did get a few things from the event:

GR-TFG Button Pin
ReaderCon Programme
Brochure of Taste by Kate Evangelista
Certificate of Attendance
Mini-journal Necklace from Alunsina Handbound Books

I love the mini-journal necklace that I got. It's so cute!

Also presented in the ReaderCon was the very 1st FILIPINO READERS' CHOICE AWARDS. And here are the winners:

But That Won’t Wake Me Up! by Annie and Anelka Lumbao and Liza Flores (Adarna House)

  1. Can't imagine how your face looked like entering that discussion. >:) And I never thought of you being shy 'clicking away' since you've been photographed a lot of times now. :) if there are new events like this, please let me know. I would really like to experience such.

    1. Hi, Charisma! LOL. I know, right? You know how I feel about Fifty Shades. haha! Well, it's kind of different when I'm the one doing the photo-taking, so yeah, whatever... I don't have a good excuse. hahaha!

Ack! Sorry it slipped my mind. I don't know why I didn't do a pre-event post regarding this (other than the Filipino Fridays posts). Anyway, I'll be sure to spread the word like crazy next time. :)

  4. Hi Janus! Glad to know you enjoyed our Fifty Shades of Grey discussion. The choice of the book started out as a random joke in our Goodreads threads when we first learned of the invite from the Filipino Readercon organizers. However, since we rarely back out of a challenging book, we went ahead with it. We enjoyed hearing the participants' reactions and opinions about the book, regardless whether they liked it or not. In our own book club, we were all equally torn about it -- some like it, some don't -- but we just agreed to disagree.

On behalf of The Mysterious Reading Society, we thank you for being part of our book discussion! :)

    1. Hi there! I'm not sure how you could get yours but maybe you could try leaving a comment (on one of their recent posts) on the site of Filipino ReaderCon (http://filipinoreadercon.wordpress.com/). I'd leave you their email address if I knew it but I'm sure a comment will help them be able to address your concern. Hope that helps. :)
