Book Haul [25]

My "Weekly Book Haul" is pretty much just like In My Mailbox by the Story Siren, This Week In Books by Pop Culture Junkie, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews and all the other titles with the similar concept here and there. This is a weekly post showcasing the books you received for the given week, either bought online or from a physical bookstore, borrowed from the library or from a friend, received for review or won from a giveaway, etc.

Hi there! Nice to see you again! I'm on short supply of new books this week, I only got three (3) but that's alright, I still have plenty to go through with my tbr pile on my shelf.

TITLES:
THE GHOST AND THE GOTH by Stacey Kade
TEMPESTUOUS by Lesley Livingston (read and reviewed)
RISE by Anna Carey
I suddenly became curious about Stacey Kade's previous books after reading The Rules: Project Paper Doll which I really liked, so I bought The Ghost and the Goth to start off on this series.

I've read Tempestuous (on ebook) a few years back and I thought to buy the paperback to complete my collection (I have Wondrous Strange and Darklight).

I am really excited about the final installment to the Eve trilogy, so I grabbed Rise as soon as it caught my eye when I was at the bookstore. Please let it be a fitting ending...

Well, that is all for me this week. Anything interesting books you got this week?

Happy reading! :)

Once by Anna Carey [REVIEW]

     TITLE: Once (Eve #2)
     AUTHOR: Anna Carey
     PUBLISHER: Harper
     PUB DATE: July 3 2012
Summary from Goodreads:

"In the second book of this thrilling dystopian adventure, Eve will come face to face with the king who has been ruthlessly hunting her and learn the shocking truth about who she really is.

Having managed to evade the soldiers hunting her, Eve finally reached Califia, a haven for women determined to live outside the oppressive rule of the King of New America. However, Eve's freedom came at a price: she was forced to leave Caleb, the boy she loves, wounded and alone at the city gates. When Eve learns that Califia may not be as safe as it seems she sets out once again in the hopes of being with Caleb only to fall into a trap that sends her to the City of Sand and directly into the hands of the King.

Once at the stronghold of the King, Eve will uncover the real reason he was so intent on her capture, and the unbelievable role he intends her to fill. When she is finally reunited with Caleb inside the city walls, Eve will risk everything to be with him."

Rating:

In the events that follow Eve, the first book of the series: Eve has been living in Califia, a sanctuary for women who chose to live outside the rules imposed by the King of the New America. Since men are not allowed within Califia, Eve had to leave Caleb behind to enter in order to avoid being captured by the King’s men.

But when word got to her that Caleb is in trouble, Eve is determined to help him out, only to find out that this was a trap. Suddenly, Eve finds herself in the last place she expected to be. The one place she has been fighting off to be held in, the City of Sand; the king’s very home.

What shocks her is finding out the real reason behind the King’s determination to locate her and what role she must play in the rebirth of the country. And when she finally sees Caleb, a wanted criminal within the city walls, she would do anything to be with him once and for all...

What started out as a simple love story with a mix of dystopia from Eve, developed into a deeper kind of story through Once.

Book Haul [9]

I haven't thought of a name for a weekly meme of book hauls so let's just go with what's posted above.

For now, I'll call this the "Whatever it's called" Book Haul. It's only temporary, I swear. I just haven't thought of a clever name for it. So this is pretty much just like In My Mailbox by the Story Siren, This Week In Books by Pop Culture Junkie, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews and all the other titles with the similar concept here and there. This is a weekly post showcasing the books you received for the given week, either bought online or from a physical bookstore, borrowed from the library or from a friend, received for review or won from a giveaway, etc.

Hello there! Nice to see you again.

Well, you know what this is about so let's get to it! I'm very excited about the books I have this week. Here they are:
BOUGHT:
(Arrived from the Book Depository)
ONCE by Anna Carey (Paperback)

Eve by Anna Carey

Eve (The Eve Trilogy #1)
by Anna Carey
Summary from Goodreads:

"Sixteen years after a deadly virus wiped out most of Earth’s population, the world is a perilous place. Eighteen-year-old Eve has never been beyond the heavily guarded perimeter of her school, where she and two hundred other orphaned girls have been promised a future as the teachers and artists of the New America. But the night before graduation, Eve learns the shocking truth about her school’s real purpose—and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Arden, her former rival from school, and Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust... and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life."

Rating:

Eve has caught me by surprise. I did not expect to like this book.

When I first heard of Eve, there were a lot of speculations about it; lots of mixed reviews so I really didn’t know how to perceive Eve.

What I like about this book is how straightforward the approach is. The author, Anna Carey, tells the story, it was definitely direct to the point. No detours and side stories that are not deemed relevant to the characters’ journey.

I also commend Carey’s way of creating a post-apocalyptic world that was very realistic that you could actually see the possibility of it to happen in our future… well way, way ahead in the future that is. I do wish the places were more described and visualized. I just felt that it lacked on that part.

There’s something that bothered me with Eve’s character though, don’t get me wrong, I like Eve. She’s brilliant in school but naïve about the world and the opposite sex. I just don’t get how easily she can adapt in any given situation. Get this, the only life she’s ever lived since her mom died was in a school that provided her with everything and when she’s escaped into the wild, she struggled for survival a little but then a few pages later she’s capable of surviving so fast and adapts to any environment. It’s just kind of hard to believe I guess.

Still, I’m really looking forward to the next installment. The ending of this book just made me want to read the next book and see how Eve and Caleb’s relationship would turn out to be.

Ramblings #3: Falling Behind on Book Reviews

Ugh! I've been busy lately that I hadn't had the liberty to post... and write reviews of the books I've finished for the past few days. Hence the emptiness of my blog for this week. Poor blog. I may be up-to-date on my reading challenge but definitely falling back on the blog posts.

So to make up for it, I'm posting the books I've finished reading just recently and giving a little insight on what I felt about them just until I get the chance to write a full review of each.

Here goes:

Extraordinary by Nancy Werlin
- Really enjoyed Werlin's book Impossible so I gave this a try too. Sadly, as great and captivating the title of this book is, it didn't surpass the beauty of Impossible.

Eve by Anna Carey
-A surprisingly good book. I actually enjoyed it even with all the mixed reviews, I'm glad I gave it a shot.

The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
-A book outside my comfort zone that actually pleased me.

Heist Society by Ally Carter
-Cute, light and engaging! I really liked this one.

Well that's it for me. Four read books without reviews. It bothers me really. I don't even know why.
